Most Roundheads sought constitutional monarchy in place of the absolute monarchy sought by Charles. The Roundhead commander-in-chief of the first Civil War, Thomas Fairfaxremained a supporter of constitutional monarchy, as did many other Roundhead leaders such as Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester and Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex ; however, this party was outmanoeuvred by the more politically-adept Cromwell and his radicals, who had the backing of the New Model Army and took advantage of Charles' perceived betrayal of England by allying with the Scottish against Parliament.

England's many Puritans and Presbyterians were almost invariably Roundhead supporters, as were many smaller religious groups such as the Independents. However many Roundheads were members of the Church of Englandas were many Cavaliers. Roundhead political factions included the proto-anarchist Diggersthe diverse group known as the Levellers and the apocalyptic Christian movement of the Fifth Monarchists.

Some Puritans, but by no means all, wore their hair closely cropped round the head or flat and there was thus an obvious contrast between them and the men of courtly fashionwho wore long ringlets. During the war and for a time afterwards, Roundhead was a term of derision [7] —in the New Model Army it was a punishable offence to call a fellow soldier a Roundhead. Cavalier also started out as a pejorative term—the first proponents used it to compare members of the Royalist party with Spanish Caballeros who had abused Dutch Protestants during the reign of Elizabeth I —but unlike Roundhead, Cavalier was embraced by those who were the target of the epithet and used by them to describe themselves.

According to John Rushworth the word was first used on 27 December by a disbanded officer named David Hide. During a riot, Hide is reported to have drawn his sword and said he would "cut the throat of those round-headed dogs that bawled against bishops".

Referring to John Pymshe asked who the roundheaded man was. Ironically, after Anglican Archbishop William Laud made a statute in instructing all clergy to wear short hair, many Puritans rebelled to show their contempt for his authority and began to grow their hair even longer as can be seen on their portraits [11] though they continued to be known as Roundheads.

The longer hair was more common among the "Independent" and "high ranking" Puritans which included Cromwellespecially toward the end of the Protectorate, while the "Presbyterian" i. By the end of this period some Independent Puritans were again derisively using the term Roundhead to refer to the Presbyterian Puritans. Roundhead remained in use to describe those with republican tendencies up until the Exclusion Crisis of —; the term was then superseded by " Whig ", initially another term with pejorative connotations.

Likewise during the Exclusion Bill crisis, the term Cavalier was replaced with " Tory ", an Irish term introduced by their opponents, and also initially a pejorative term.

Watch the video. Written by Anonymous. I was given a chance to get a sneak peak at this movie in return for my honest opinion, which I'm happy to deliver here. As a fan of Cowan's previous work I'd been looking forward to this movie for years, and I am happy to say that I walked away from my viewing satisfied. This film warms my animation-loving heart. I respect and appreciate all styles and techniques, but I'll always have a spot in my soul for the kind of 2D animation I grew up.

COWAN Roundhead ( not for sale)

This film might be made using the latest computer software but the art-style and fundamentals are rooted in the traditional work of Warner Brothers, UPA, and Hanna Barbera. They travel through a literal jungle to the urban jungle, where they are faced with the most horrifying force of all: bureaucracy. The story isn't the most complicated in the world but as the story progressed I was pleasantly surprised to find it builds to something bigger than I'd expected.

The start is a little slow but it ends in a frantic, funny, and satisfying conclusion. This movie isn't perfect but most of its flaws are to be expected given the movie's minuscule budget.

Some scenes feel a little dragged out and the audio recording isn't the best. If those sound like big deals to you then knock a few points off my score. Sign In. I do not claim to have originated the best strain of the pit games in the world in my Alabama Roundheads, but the fact that they have won the majority of their fights and kept pace with the ever-increasing speed of the game for the past twenty years, under all rules and any length of gaff, is very gratifying.

For the past several years I have done most of my fighting at Memphis, Tenn. My fowl have passed the experimental stage, having their characteristics inbred into them, and I feel with my system of breeding I can hold them at their present standard for years to come.
